Finally, a new theme!

Date August 21, 2007

Last night after I had given up on the theme I was working with, I still just couldn’t leave it alone. So I started poking around, looking for a new theme. What I found was the Cleaker 2.1 theme, made available by Adam Walker Cleaveland of Cleve Design. Thanks a lot Adam!

I was up for quite awhile modifying some items on the theme, and I plan on changing some others later on, but let me tell you, I am sure glad to finally have a new theme.

Port 16’s original theme, Redatom 1.0 by AskGraphics, was very nice, but I just had trouble with some aspects of it.

If you find any problems with this theme, let me know and I’ll do my best to straighten them out. I know that the comments box is skewed to the right a little bit, when viewed with FireFox, and I’ll get to that.

So, enough of that, let me ask you this.

How do you like this theme?

I like this one. Very sharp!

      But not without it’s problems….

It seems to be having some trouble with the existing images. If the image is larger than your text, it obscures the info bar at the bottom of the post. See http://port16.com/blog/2007/08/20/watch-your-step-and-dont-mind-the-dust/ to see what I mean.

Also, In Firefox, the comment box is too wide and extends just a little bit in to the sidebar area on the right. Oddly, the comment box looks fine in IE7, although the image problems still exist.

Oh, I just reread the post and see you already know about the Firefox comment box problem. Doh!

Thanks Art! I’m glad you like it.

I noticed the image problem too, but I put it kind of low on my list, since I don’t often write posts that are shorter than the image.

I also have to fix how it handles the pre and code tags in the comments, which is just above the image issue on the to do list.

      Here is an example:
      Pre tag:

      cd
      cd Art-is-Cool
      cd
      cd Mike-Loves-Scripts
if %IsThisReal% = Yes then echo Yes
      Yes

      Here is the code tag:

      cd\
      cd Art-is-Cool
      cd\
      cd Mike-Loves-Scripts
if %IsThisReal% = Yes then echo Yes
      Yes

The posts handle those tags nicely, it is only the comments that have the problem. I think I found the style sheet I need, but I haven’t had a chance to fix it.

Mike, I like the new theme. Much nicer feel for your blogs personality. Even though I just did a quick rev this weekend, dreaming about doing a major overhaul.

      Thanks Phil!

I like your new theme. I have always had trouble with finding a theme I like, and last night, after my first attempt didn’t work out, I was thinking about asking if you wanted to pass on your old theme. :-)

It was funny, because I also saw another theme that I liked, and almost grabbed it, but after I checked, it was the same theme that Art uses on Incoherent Mumbling. I sure would have been embarrassed if I didn’t notice that. :-)

Next time I do a major rework, I’m going to start with installing all of the bells and whistle plug-ins and customizations before populating data and doing the design tweaks. It just makes life easier. Debating about improving my current theme, i.e. extending it out or starting from scratch. Really low priority right now.

    7. Mike Scott said:

That isn’t a bad idea. I don’t know enough CSS and PHP to write my own theme from scratch yet, but I wouldn’t mind doing that in the future.

Same thing though, its a really low priority, at least now that I have something that I like.

Wow. Mike, I think this may be the most active topic on your blog so far!

Actually, your last comment just put it over the top, and then there was this one, so I guess it is in the lead by 2.

Before your comment, it was tied with Problems uploading images to WordPress using Windows Live Writer Beta, I just checked.

Although I was a bit disappointed, when I saw the title of the Live Writer Post, I noticed I had spelled it “Liver Writer”. I corrected it now though. Usually you or Phil corrects me on those.

I guess that explains all of the referrals from “www.AnimalPartWritingInstruments.com :-)

Sorry to let you down mate :)

      AnimalPartWritingInstruments.com, now that’s funny.

No problem Phil, and thanks, that sure gave me a good chuckle.

And they say that all the good domain names are gone!

    12. art said:

Yeah I didn’t catch it either. Sorry about that.

    13. Mike Scott said:

No sweat. Heck, I typed it and I missed it. Thanks for the other catches. I think Art is actually beating Phil on grammatical errors, and Phil is winning on blog functional errors.

I do appreciate the help though!
