Port 16 Blog Report for August

Date September 2, 2007

imageWell, it’s been a big month for Port 16, I didn’t bother writing a summary post for July, since I didn’t really do much, and it was the blog’s first half month in existence, most of which I spent on vacation.

So what happened in August?

This month was mostly about layout, and getting some sort of a posting schedule going. This month I made 36 posts, bringing the grand total up to 41 posts. I found a theme that I really like, and modified it so that it is even more to my liking.

Here are a few stats about my visitors, laugh if you want:

Visitors: 152 Absolute Unique Visitors. Each one of them cherished.

Page Views: 1,370 page views (I’m sure most of that was me).

New Visits: 34.06% were new visitors

Bounce Rate: 43.72%

All in all, I’m pretty darn happy with the turnout this month. I really have to thank Phil at Thought Sparks, and Art at Incoherent Mumbling, for all of their comments. Really, all of you that commented, thank you!

I had my last blog for several years, but I never really connected with the community much, and I really think that I’m getting to meet some great people now. It really makes blogging so much more fun.

Now, for the juiciest posts, here are the top 5 for this month:

1. Finally, a new theme!

2. Problems Uploading Images to WordPress using Windows Live Writer Beta?

3. 6 Reasons Not to Stop Drinking Coffee

4. A Study in Heat, Time and Smoke: Pulled Pork

5. Easy way to Schedule a future post in WordPress

Ok, so what’s in store next month? Well, I started Port 16 so that I could try and help people, of all technical backgrounds, exploit technology. I mean, what good is it if you don’t understand why you would want it, and how to use it. So next month I would like to start getting more into that theme.

This month I had a bunch of posts, and although I’m glad that I was able to keep cranking them out, 3 of the top 5 had nothing to do with my mission.

One more time, I want to thank everyone who commented, and all of my readers. Please feel free to let me know what you liked or disliked. I welcome feedback, even if it is negative.

Stay tuned.

Finally, a new theme!

Date August 21, 2007

Last night after I had given up on the theme I was working with, I still just couldn’t leave it alone. So I started poking around, looking for a new theme. What I found was the Cleaker 2.1 theme, made available by Adam Walker Cleaveland of Cleve Design. Thanks a lot Adam!

I was up for quite awhile modifying some items on the theme, and I plan on changing some others later on, but let me tell you, I am sure glad to finally have a new theme.

Port 16’s original theme, Redatom 1.0 by AskGraphics, was very nice, but I just had trouble with some aspects of it.

If you find any problems with this theme, let me know and I’ll do my best to straighten them out. I know that the comments box is skewed to the right a little bit, when viewed with FireFox, and I’ll get to that.

So, enough of that, let me ask you this.

How do you like this theme?

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.

AKA: This is not my beautiful House! This is not my beautiful blog!

Sorry folks, the theme changes didn’t work out.

I had been playing with the theme I wanted to use over on http://testbed.port16.com and it looked good, I was pretty happy with it and I thought that all I had to do was drop in my code, and I would be good to go.

No Such Luck.

Although the widget panel in site admin looks like it works, it doesn’t. I’m not sure what the problem is there, but I didn’t feel like putting all of the widgets that I want into the theme by hand.

So, back to the drawing board.

Unfortunately I used up my “messing with the blog” quota for tonight. I’ll be back.

I’m going to be applying a new theme tonight, so just bear with me. I’ll post again when I’m all finished.

Some things may break, and I’ll be fixing them as I go.

All finished, at least I think I am.

I moved the blog, and it wasn’t too bad at all. I have been reading up on my .htaccess, and now if you type the domain name with or without the www, you will be redirected to http://port16.com/blog. It works pretty nicely.

I have one link out there that is probably going to be broken,

The one problem that I saw, was that Technorati is counting every post in the /blog directory as a link to the root directory. Very inconvenient.

I knew that I was going to break the links to the images, and at this point I didn’t have much up there, so I just went through and fixed them all.

Thanks for bearing with me.
