Well everyone, I decided to move my blog to a “/blog” subdirectory. You probably won’t see this before I do the move, but I might as well let you know.
Wish me luck, even if you don’t see this.

I’ve been a little quiet for the last couple of days because I’ve been kicking around a few ideas, and right now deciding on the structure of my site has me stumped. Of course this blog is less than a month old, and I want to get this worked out before I put too much content up.
I know, I should have had this all squared away before I started, but I was really excited to have my own domain name, that I just had to get started.
My original idea was to set up a site that gets fairly technical, and use port 16 for personal stuff. The problem here is that I have somewhat limited time, so I don’t think that I’ll actually be able to create enough content for both. Recently I’ve been thinking that I might as well do both here on Port 16.
Right now my blog is at the root of the site, which I think will turn out to be a bad idea. If I ever want to do anything else with the site, then I will have to move everything around later, after I have created gobs of stuff. Either I’ll break any external links coming into the blog, or I’ll have to make all sorts of crazy redirects.
If nothing else, I think that I should move my blog into a /blog subdirectory, and either set up a place holder in the root, or a redirect, like Wendy Piersall does.
So thanks for reading, and stay tuned.
August 6, 2007I had forgotten all about wanting to get my feedburner icons set up, like I mentioned in my To do list. Thanks to Phil over at Thought Sparks for mentioning it to me. So now there is a generic icon, as well as a series of reader specific subscribe links on the top of the right hand column.
I also enabled the “Email this • Add to del.icio.us • Stumble It! • Digg This!” links at the bottom of each post. They have been showing up in the RSS feed, but now they work on the site.
I don’t think that I have mentioned it, but I am always open to suggestions, feedback, and constructive criticism.

Well, I’m back, and we survived our vacation. I was glad to see that my Jeep was unharmed in the airport’s long term parking, my house hadn’t burned down, and all of our pets survived. We had some really great house sitters who took care of the house and pets, so I wasn’t really worried about those items.
We flew back in to Colorado yesterday, and were just exhausted. The accommodations were terrific, my wife’s family made sure we were comfortable, but there is something about sleeping in your own bed. Maybe I’m getting old.
The kids were pretty happy to sleep anywhere, which is pretty normal for them, but without a schedule, they just weren’t getting the sleep they needed, which showed in their behavior. Not to mention a little spoiling by the grandparents. I think they had more candy over those two weeks than they had all year
Last night, at about 6 PM, we all laid down to enjoy the air conditioning in our room, and the next thing I know, it is 10:45 and everyone is asleep. I was worried that the kids were going to wake up at 2 AM, but after putting them in their beds, they slept until 7. I really needed that sleep!
I go back to work tomorrow, and it is nice to have a day to get everything back on track here. I have a whole lot of stuff to write about, and I’ll make sure to share some pictures too. Those posts will be appearing somewhat irregularly in the near future. Right now I’m trying to catch up on my email and RSS feeds.
So stay tuned.
July 16, 2007I am leaving tomorrow for some well deserved vacation, so don’t expect any blog updates while I am away. If I can get Internet access, I may post something, but I doubt it.
Of course, I don’t want to leave you with nothing to read while I’m away. So, here is your reading assignment:
Art posted an interview with me about my decision to move to Port 16 (abandoning The Bit Bucket)
While you are over there, you should read some of his other posts, like how to hide the fact that you are reading Harry Potter, Run Windows Apps on Linux, or learn some new facts about German bathroom habits. Art also posts a lot about Portable Apps.
If you run out of things to read there at Incoherent Mumbling, here are some other blogs you can check out:
Ghosts in the Machine – Sharon has lots of good stuff here. Digital identity, privacy, net neutrality, and other topics.
Homespun Honolulu – You guessed it, a Hawaii blog. Even though I don’t live there any more, I still miss it sometimes.
Necessary Skills – Peter Haslam writes some really well thought out, deep posts here. Absolutely a blog worth reading.
Thought Sparks – Various topics, great posts.
When I return, there will be a quiz.
