The Pownce Conundrum

I’ve had a little change in philosophy lately when it comes to pownce.

A long time ago, possibly even months, I decided that I’m kind of tired of getting all of these messages about things I don’t care about. I mean, come on, I don’t care about what you had for breakfast.

Ok, let’s be a little more specific, I don’t care what you have for breakfast on a daily basis, unless it’s something really cool or strange. I mean really, if you post and say “strangest thing happened to me today, I had an iguana breakfast burrito”, then I would be pretty interested.

Not only in how it tasted, but where exactly one might obtain a iguana breakfast burrito.

Man. I sure love breakfast burritos.

I better stay focused. What was I talking about? Oh yea, that’s right.

Assuming that you didn’t have an especially strange or interesting breakfast, I probably don’t care.

I think it is safe to assume that I especially don’t want to know what you had for breakfast, after you posted “good morning” to all of your friends. So, after suffering from information apathy, I turned off my message notifications.

The other day, a friend sent me a private message. Luckily, I still had the notifications turned on for personal messages. The thought struck me that I almost missed that, and right now, my friends could be posting something really cool, and I would be missing it.

So I turned on the email notifications again, but this time I removed a bunch of people that were creating a whole lot of noise. This has really made things much more manageable.

I don’t mind people who post frequently, but it has to be worth reading. I’ll have to keep that in mind when I start posting more frequently. It’s not quantity, but quality.

By the Way, if the phrase “Information Apathy” hasn’t been used before, I hereby coin it.

Pownce: I’m not Complaining, Merely Offering my Observations

Date September 19, 2007

Is it me, or has Pownce been unavailable pretty frequently lately?

Pownce still requires an invite in order to join, so I assume that it’s still considered “in beta”. Even if it isn’t I don’t get angry about temporary outages for 3 reasons.

1. The service is free (at least for me, I haven’t gone “Pro”).

2. IT is my profession. So I understand, bad things happen, even to good servers.

3. If it starts to get annoying, I’ll just use something else.

All in all, I can’t complain, Pownce is pretty neat, and I like the service. Besides the outages, the only issue I’ve had is that I don’t always get notified when people reply to a note that I have replied to.

If you are on Pownce, feel free to add me, this is my public profile.

If you aren’t on Pownce, and would like to be, leave a comment, and I’ll email you an invite, I still have a few left.

Summary for the Week ending September 16th

Date September 17, 2007

The big news this week, at least on the personal side of things, was the release of the Fortress Forever. I have been waiting for it for so long, and so far I’ve played a little over 6 hours.

I didn’t realize it until Monday the 10th, but the mumbler has returned! Art has returned from China with his lovely bride. I was heartbroken while he was gone, and not only didn’t I get his emails and blog updates, but his server was down, so I couldn’t even look at his blogs at all.

Art always refers to me on his blog as “MBM” for “my buddy mike”. I even have my own tag on his blog. One of his blogs is called “Incoherent Mumbling“, also accessible from www.mumblr.com, so I decided that I am going to start referring to him as “the mumbler”. At least sometimes.

Also it turns out that while I was goofing off all weekend, Phil from Thought Sparks has been busy launching his new blog, Tech Fires. Read his announcement for yourself. Phil’s been churning out some really great tutorials lately, so I’m really interested to see what he puts on his new site.

I’m also really interested in one of his widgets, it points to BlogRush. Looks like a syndication widget that gets you syndicated on other blogs as well. Looks pretty neat, I’ll have to go check it out.

In Tech News, one of the bigger stories this week has been the release of the iPhone software unlock, which I think I have covered enough for the week.

Also, last weekend I realized that football season has started again! What was I doing to miss that? I’m not a huge football fan, and as a matter of fact, last year was the first year that I watched more than the Super Bowl in about a decade.

If your curious, I’m a Denver fan, since I lived here for about a decade now, I should probably root for the local team. I also cheer for the Patriots, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh.

I also made a few minor changes to the blog, I added my Pownce feed, the MyBlogLog widget, and also some more adsense ads.

I’m looking forward to a more productive week, thanks to all of my readers, and to everyone who commented on the posts this week or provided me with valuable feedback.

Remember, you can reach me on Pownce, if you are on it, as well as my blog log or on email. My email address is “mike” at this domain name (port16.com). Feel free to drop me any thoughts or comments.
